The Loop Head Peninsula, Ireland

The Loop Head Peninsula is surrounded by the River Shannon to the South, and by the Atlantic Ocean to the North with a majestic coastal scenery. The Shannon Estuary is home to more than 100 dolphins which can regularly be seen from the coast or on dolphin watching boat tours from Carrigaholt. The rugged beauty of the area is largely unspoilt - so much so that the area can boast of having the purest air in Europe offering many exciting outdoor activities (see next page). The Loop Head Peninsula was the overall winner of the competition "The best place to holiday in Ireland" by "The Irish Times" in 2013!. The 'Loop Head Drive' is part of the Wild Atlantic Way and brings you from Carrigaholt to all the scenic highlights of the area.

Carrigaholt (Irish: Carraig an Chabhaltaigh, meaning "Rock of the Fleet") is a small fishing village with a castle which was built in about 1480 by the McMahons, chiefs of the Corcabascin Peninsula. It stands at the end of a fishing pier overlooking the Shannon Estuary and the harbour. It is a tall, well-preserved five storey tower house with a fiery and colourful history [more...].

The town of Kilkee is just 5 kms. away and one of the country's most popular seaside resorts with quite a few natural amenities around its horseshoe-shaped bay. The safe sheltered sandy beach is protected by Duggerna Reef, which is a natural wonder itself with some large and small rock pools full of marine life. Breathtaking cliff walks offer splendid scenery. This Cliff scenery all along to Loop Head Lighthouse is one of Ireland's greatest natural attractions.

Kilrush is a market and heritage town with access to the Shannon River through a modern Marina. One of its most interesting attractions is historical Scattery Island, an Irish landmark which can be reached by a boat from the marina.

The coast road from Kilkee to the North is also part of the Wild Atlantic Way through County Clare with a number of highlights along the coast, the beaches in Doughmore, Spanish Point and Lahinch, the Cliffs of Moher, Doolin (ferry to the Aran Islands) and the amazing carstic terrain of the Burren Geo Park.
